Easier On Paper [A Way Out: Leo & Vincent]
Title: Easier On Paper
Fandom: A Way Out (2018)
Cast: Leo Caruso, Vincent Moretti
Rating: Teen
Summary: Leo finds out about Vincent differently (fix-it fic).
Notes: For Kay - sorry I couldn't commit to a full fix-it, I tried. (It's been four years since I last wrote anything, and I came back with this?)
"You know what? I think I'm gonna write that letter to Carol."
Leo wakes up from the slight shake at his shoulder, and sits up as fast as he can. Being quick to wake up has saved his ass a few times, but he's finding it a little harder right now - he figures he's probably barely slept.
He's still rubbing his eyes as Vincent passes him a piece of paper. "Here, read this. Tell me what you think."
Leo takes it with both hands. It's dark outside now, so he has to hunch over a little bit to get close enough to read it, without holding it two inches from his face. Luckily, Vincent's handwriting is pretty easy to read - no fancy stuff, just a nice clear print - even if the lights in the plane don't really help.
At the top of the page, hastily scrawled, there's some writing that doesn't look like it was ever meant to be part of the letter.
Do NOT read this out loud. The police will be there when we land. Follow my lead.
The rest is a fairly normal apology letter. It's not addressed to anyone; even though some of the lines could almost be directed at him (I never meant for things to go this far.), it's clearly for Carol (I want to be a better man for you, a better husband.). Not that it matters much to Leo, because there's one part near the beginning that he keeps going back to:
I'm going to resign from the force.
He's angry, but he's not an idiot - Vincent wanted him to read this for a reason. Looking at the pilot seat, he figures that Emily's probably in on it; she can probably contact the cops, pretend like she's talking to air control or something. Hell, she's probably one of them as well.
So now Leo knows about the cops, and the cops don't know that he knows about the cops. Leo knows that Vincent's a cop, and Emily's probably a cop. Hopefully Emily's so busy bringing the plane down that she hasn't worked out that he knows any of this.
Oh, shit. The plane is going to land soon, he hasn't got a plan, and all he knows is who is going to be a cop when the plane lands (which is everyone but him). And Vincent, who is also a fucking cop, wanted him to know this.
He takes a deep breath.
He's fairly sure he can trust Vincent. He's helped, a little bit. So, Vincent probably has a plan. Probably. Sure, he normally takes longer than Leo does to think of a plan, but they're generally less... violent than the ones Leo comes up with. He's probably going to get arrested, but maybe Vincent's got a way out of this that doesn't get Leo killed.
He hopes he's not overthinking this.
Leo straightens up, looks Vincent dead in the eye as he hands the letter back, and nods.
"Yeah, that should do it."
